We are seeking Pumper Improvers for a shipyard project supporting naval and commercial vessel operations. This role plays a critical part in preparing tanks and confined spaces for gas-free certification and ensuring work is performed safely and effectively in support of ship repair and maintenance efforts.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Perform supervised preparation of shipboard spaces for Marine Chemist “Safe for Workers – Safe for Hot Work” certifications.
  • Open, inspect, clean, and close tanks using proper blanking and safety procedures.
  • Power wash tanks and spaces as required.
  • Assist with vacuum truck operations, oil spill responses, and fluid transfers.
  • Set up positive and negative ventilation systems in confined spaces.
  • Assist with Lock-out/Tag-out and WAF procedures, hydrostatic and air testing.
  • Complete required paperwork and support checkpoints and QA documentation processes.
  • Comply with OSHA standards, NAVSEA Standard Items (including 009-88, 009-25), and company safety policies.
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas, tools, and equipment.
  • Work closely with the Journeyman or Supervisor to complete tasks safely and efficiently.

Requirements for this role include:

  • Minimum of 4 years of related experience, including 2 years in a maritime environment.
  • Must be able to comprehend instructions, diagrams, and technical documents.
  • Familiarity with ship repair terminology and ship compartment nomenclature.
  • Must be capable of wearing all required PPE including respirator, harness, and flotation gear.
  • Documented Competent Person Training required.
  • Ability to perform math functions using US standard and basic metric measurements.
  • Must be physically fit and able to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in all weather conditions.
  • Experience using hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Strong communication and situational awareness in fast-paced environments.
